Unlucky Divine just misses out
Thursday, 15 October 2009
FINCHLEY RACING’S Vince Divine was unlucky to lose out on cycling’s Eastern Road Race League Individual Championship at the last race on Sunday, but he did have a good excuse – it had been his Stag Night the previous evening.
Ben Thompson of the BMC Team just overhauled Divine by a few points in the last race, and Finchley Racing Team also finished second in the Team Classification, by a mere four points.
The club had a very successful season, with a total of 28 wins and many minor placings, as well as the Eastern Region Track ten mile Championship win by Trevor Burke and John McMillan’s triumph in the Vets Championship.
Riders Edgar Medellin, Andy Cullinane, Costas Pieredes, Kevin Elderfield, Werner Otto, Piers Brown, Andy Hastings and others were in the thick of the action all season with some fine attacking rides.
Sponsorship by Magic Homes is assured for next year, with local cycle store Shorter-Rochford Cycles also signing-up for 2010.
Veteran cyclist triumphs
Thursday, 17 September 2009
FINCHLEY RACING’S Trevor Burke scored a hugely impressive win at the Eastern Counties Track Championships at the Welwyn Stadium on Saturday.
In the premier event of the afternoon, the ten-mile scratch race, the veteran cyclist burst clear with two laps to go and succeeded in holding off the field to take the prize in fine style.
The vast majority of the top London track riders were present, making it an especially notable victory for a man giving away at least 20 years to most of the field.
Four-medal haul for Finchley Racers

The Finchley Racers grabbed four medals in all age categories at the South Eastern Veterans’ Championships held on the ‘Hoggenberg’ racing circuit on Saturday.
In the 60-plus category, John McMillan took off alone from the start and quickly established a good lead, which he increased to lap the bunch. He then jumped away again to narrowly miss gaining another lap on his way to the gold. In the 40-plus category, Edgar Medellin took a gold in a three-man sprint, with Andy Cullinane taking bronze in what was a very hotly-contested race. Meanwhile, Costas Pieredes took silver in the 50-plus category, narrowly outsprinted by a former French professional.

Double triumph for cyclists
Thursday, 13 August 2009
CYCLISTS from Finchley Racing Team continued their excellent record at Hoggenberg circuit in Rebridge by securing another two victories there in the past week.
Comeback man Simon Hime attacked the field incessantly on Thursday last week, finally breaking away on his own at the halfway mark and winning alone by half a lap.
And, at the same circuit on Sunday, Steve Wharton scored a fine win by chasing down the leading group and then jumping away from them on the final lap to take the triumph.
Elsewhere in Essex, Andy Cullinane came seventh in a massive bunch sprint in the Chelmsford race – only to be told that he had been disqualified earlier for crossing the white line.
On the other side of London, John McMillan finished third in a 50-mile race held on the Dunsford Aerodrome circuit.
